In the earlydays of civilization, gold was wanted because of its beauty whenworn as jewelry. Ancient peoples could have decided on any one metal to make themost precious, and they chose gold. Today, we still value gold, viewing it as the only true universal currency.

Gold has been seen in the past as a safety netin times of uncertainty. With the economic slowdown, war in the middleeast, and a multitude of other factors, gold has enjoyed fairly steady growth since the early 2000s, particularly 2001 and 2003.

When investing in gold coins, stocks, bullion or otherwise, its important to remember to diversify your portfolio. In other words, don't treat this like a game of Texas Hold Em. Nobody expects disaster to strike, but when it doesand the market crashes, you need to be prepared.

That being said, goldcan be a reasonable investment in small amounts. In general, the ideal portfolio would be both well diversified and well performing. Along with some measure of cash, there should be a decent amount ofliquidity as well, possibly in the form of gold bullion.

Another point to considerwhen deciding on your gold investing strategy is deciding in which formyou'll buy it. Most people think of investing in gold as just buyinga bunch of gold coins, like Scrooge McDuck. While that's certainly the easiest way to buy gold, there are other ways that can be worth exploring.

You could buy stock in a gold mining company. You couldstart your own gold mining company! You could write articles about investing in gold and post them on the Internet.
