WrittenBy:Gabriel J. Adams Texas isthe second largest state in the nation in both areaand population. Withan area of almost 269,000 square miles, the only state that is larger than Texas is Alaska. Texas is as large as all of the NewEngland states, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Illinois combined. The King Ranch, located in the Texas town of Kingsville, is bigger thanthe state of RhodeIsland, and the Dallas/Fort Worth airport is largerthan New York City's Manhattan Island. With a population of nearly twenty-four million, theonly state with more residents than Texas is California. Of the nation's ten largest cities, three are in Texas - Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio. Asidefrom big traffic jams, those three cities have something else incommon. They have big crime rates. Although thenumbers for overall Texascriminal records are lower than other states in thenation, the numbers for these three cities are much higher than the national average. Whencomparing Texas criminal records, the numbers can be quite confusing. Whatyou need to understand is this... While many Texas cities have extremely high crime rates, Texas as a whole is not at the top of the crime rate charts. There are states that have higher crime rates than Texas. According tothe results of the 2000 Most Dangerous and Safest State Awards, Texasis not the safest place to live, yet it isn't the most dangerous state tolive in either. Louisiana had the highest murder rate, and North Dakotahad the lowest. Texas was number seventeen. Alaska took the lead in the number of rapes that were committed, and Montana took last place. Texas came in at number sixteen. Maryland had the most robberies, and Vermont had theleast. Texas was ranked number nineteen. More people were assaulted in New Mexico than in any other state, and the least assaults took place in North Dakota. Texas held the number sixteen position. More burglaries werecommitted in New Mexico than in any other state, and New Hampshire fellvictim to the least burglaries. Texas stood at number thirteen. Themost motor vehicle thefts took place in Arizona, and theleast motor vehicles were stolen in South Dakota. Once again, Texas held the number thirteenstanding. Since Houston and Dallas have crime rates that are two and three times the national average, it is evident that crimeis centered round the state's most populated metropolitan areas.
