The process of building a chicken coup can seem slightly intimidating at first, but it's critical that you're aware of a few main issues to make sure you have your bases covered. Far too many people rush through the building process without consulting a proper guide that will lead them to success.

Often it's simple errors in judgement that at the end of the day cost you the biggest results, so carefully pay attention to the following tips. If you do, you can be sure that your chicken coup is a success.

Decide On The Number Of Chickens You'll Keep

The first step in building a chicken coup is making sure you think about the number of chickens you plan to keep. If you're like many farmers, you're mostly looking to have two to three - enough to supply you with some fresh eggs every morning for breakfast.

There will be a few exceptions where you'll want to have five or more chickens in, however for the most part, small chicken coups are easy to take care of and maintain.

Whatever decision you do choose, think carefully about it ahead of time. The biggest mistake you could make is trying to cram too many chickens into a smaller sized house you've built.

When you do that, they definitely will not lay any fresh eggs for you.

Think About Your Sunlight

After you have the main structure of the chicken coup figured out, the next step will be making sure the chickens get enough sunlight. If you live in a very well lit area, this may not be a problem at all, but if you don't, you'll want to be sure you're angling your chicken coup correctly so as to maximize the sunlight exposure you do get.

This is yet another problem many farmers make - they build and add windows, but then the window side of the coup only gets a couple hours of sunlight a day.

If you are in an area where you really have no option but to build a certain way, then you'll need to think about adding artificial light to make sure it stays well lit.

Construct A Good Chicken Fence

Finally, the last thing to know as you build a chicken coup is that making sure you have a good fence built is vital. There are a very large number of predators out there all who want to prey on your chickens.

If you don't take the time to build this fence, then there's a high chance one day your chickens will be hit, and when they do, that will be the end of it. Most predators don't leave much behind, so to avoid this devastating experience, make sure you have a good chicken fence in place.

So don't overlook any of these points. The more information you can get before you start, the greater your chances of both saving money and seeing success with your chicken coup.
